REWRITING BEI DAO: MENG LONG POETRY 朦胧诗 IN PORTUGUESE LANGUAGE

Abstract

Considered as one of vanguard poets of Chinese modern poetry, specifically speaking, of Menglong poetry, Bei Dao enjoys a vast translation and heartening international reception. However, Bei Dao is yet to see the same attention either in translation or in literary criticism as in other languages. Based on this fact, the present article aims to give a brief presentation to the Portuguese-speaking world about the poet Bei Dao, his poetry, and the era in which he lived. And then, it explores the issues of “translatability” and “chineseness” discussed throughout the dissemination of Bei Dao’s poetry. Focused on these two elements, we’ll advance an academic study on the translation of Bei Dao’s poetry from Chinese to Portuguese in light of André Lefevere’s (1992) concept of “rewriting” and Even-Zhoar’s (1990) polysystems theory, Gideon Toury’s (2012) norms.
