Metalinguistic activities on the same term: A comparative study in the collaborative translation process

Abstract

This paper aims to analyze and compare the unique path taken by two dyads who collaboratively translated the same Latin term. The process of two-way translation, or collaborative translation, is a language event strongly marked by interaction between translating agents (O'Brien, 2011). From this event, it is possible to observe and analyze metalinguistic activities of various kinds, including lexical, morphosyntactic, semantic, pragmatic and discursive, involved in reading the target text and writing the target text in translation (Pym, 2017; Venuti, 2012). The data analyzed in this study comprise speech and writing records collected through the Ramos System (Calil, 2020), a multimodal capture system that allows access to the oral negotiation of the dyads and their respective metalinguistic activities. In our study, the following strategies used by dyads in the translation process of the Latin term were made visible, namely: recurrence to homophony and homography between languages; identification of morphological elements essential to understanding the Latin text; reflections on the semantic possibilities of a Latin term that best presents itself for the writing of the text in the mother tongue. However, each dyad followed particular paths in the course of these strategies.
