“A CLOCKWORK ORANGE” EM PORTUGAL: A TRADUÇÃO DO NADSAT

Abstract

A Clockwork Orange, a novel written by the British author Anthony Burgess, is remarkable for the use of Nadsat, a slang invented by the author. The novel poses a significant translation challenge as linguistic creativity and transgressive styles are often difficult to recreate in translation. In Portugal, A Clockwork Orange was translated twice: the first time by José Luandino Vieira and the second time by Vasco Gato, presenting differences at various levels. For the present study we have chosen to investigate what were the main strategies used by both translators in Portugal regarding the translation of Nadsat.
