VINCENZO GROSSI: TRANSLATING THE COLONIALIST POINT OF VIEW

Abstract

This text is the paratext of the translation of two chapters of Nel paese delle Amazzoni, published in Rome in 1897 by the Italian professor Vicenzo Grossi (1860-1913), after his long trip to South America and specifically to Brazil and the Amazon (1891-1892). The relevance of Grossi’s text is due to the presentation of various aspects of the Amazon region, to the synthesis of texts by other foreign travelers of the 19th century and to the exposition, once again, of the colonialist foreign point of view on Brazil, seen as important for trade and European economic interests. The translated excerpts deal with the anthropic aspects of the region, on the one hand, and with the myths and songs of the Indians (in this case, from various Brazilian regions).
