“O RELÓGIO DE OURO” [THE GOLD WATCH], BY MACHADO DE ASSIS, AND ITS TRANSLATIONS INTO ENGLISH: A REFLECTION ON THE INFLUENCE OF CULTURAL CAPITAL

Abstract

This article is a somewhat anedotic account of an interpretative journey that started casually and grew deeper and denser as translations of the original tale by Machado de Assis titled “O Relógio de Ouro” came to be known and were compared. Two particular terms, “nhonhô” and “Iaiá”, have different translatorial solutions that end up by transforming the text to such an extent that they change its ending and its interpretation as a whole. The finding that the tale had a previous version, published as a feuilleton, added yet another layer of complexity to the network of interpretations. In some instances, the influence of cultural capital, as proposed by Pierre Bourdieu, becomes evident.
