Analysis of openings in telephone interpreting: Case study

Abstract

The present study focuses on a specific aspect of telephone interpreting (TI), a form of remote interpreting that is gaining popularity in the interpreting market. The article focuses on the analysis of mobile phone call openings, and more specifically on the interactions between the service provider's operator and the interpreter before providing the service to the client. The study follows a qualitative methodology, based on the analysis of this first contact in 23 real conversations carried out by Chinese and Spanish interpreters in a company providing IT services. The subjects of the study are professional interpreters with experience in both face-to-face and telephone interpreting, and the subject matter of the conversations is limited in our study to roadside assistance. The results are intended to provide information for the design of training actions.
