Dar uma pedalada fiscal or marcar um gol de placa? Phraseology in Soccer and politics

ABSTRACT

This article, based on Mejri’s phraseological theory (1997Mejri, S. (1997). Le figement lexical: descriptions linguistiques et structuration sémantique. Ortiz Alvarez (Ed.), Tendências atuais na pesquisa descritiva e aplicada em fraseologia e paremiologia (p. 139-156). Pontes Editores.), aims to describe and analyze phraseologies in the political and soccer discourses, maintaining or reframing the phraseological meaning according to the context of use. To this end, we used the studies of Salvador (2017Salvador, C. F. N. (2017). http://repositorio.ufpa.br:8080/jspui/ha... ) as corpora. First, we consulted such studies to identify sequences that were related to both domains in question. Secondly, we isolated 30 phraseological units and their respective contexts and analyzed them syntactically and semantically. The results indicate that the two domains are related and influence each other linguistically. The political discourse uses sequences that are typical of the soccer discourse to implement strategies that seek to persuade the interlocutor, based on the construction of an identity between voters and fans, as in Brazil soccer is an important cultural product that promotes a patriotic sense of nationalism. Phraseologisms such as baixar a bola, bola da vez, pisar na bola, campo político and pátria de chuteiras illustrate how soccer and politics intersect in the field of phraseology.
