Parábola. ), in which the phenomena of language are understood in an interdisciplinary way, in this article I analyze the linguistic ideologies that appear in the narratives of leaders and attendants of Umbanda centers about the speech action of pretos-velhos, questioning the historical “co-naturalization” of language and race as a violent racist metaphysics. I approximate the speech of the pretos-velhos to what Lélia González (1988Gonzalez, L. (1998). ) called “Oralitura” - forms of survival of the Black diaspora in Brazil. Finally, I argue that these “spirits of light” transcend dualities (oral/written; life/death), inscribe the knowledge of the African diaspora into Brazilian culture, and challenge the ideologies of whitening and of the monoglot standard that define hegemonic imaginations about the Portuguese language in Brazil.
