ABSTRACT

In this review, we present and discuss the book “Supporting Multilingual Learners’ Academic Language Development: A Language-Based Approach to Content Instruction” by Luciana C. de Oliveira, published in 2023 by Routledge. The publication introduces an innovative approach aimed at professionals working in primary and secondary education who teach multilingual students (MLs), known as the Language-Based Approach to Content Instruction (LACI). This approach serves both as a framework to support lesson planning and as a model for teacher education that integrates language and content. The author’s proposal addresses the growing presence of MLs worldwide, with a particular emphasis on the context of the United States and its immigration features. Despite originating from a context that may be considered quite different from Brazil, LACI provides resources related to the methodologies and the specificities of disciplinary language which can be adapted to Brazilian schools and teacher education programs for bi/multilingual education - an emerging field in the country that lacks theoretical and practical guidelines.
