Brazilian dictionaries and wordicide

ABSTRACT

In this paper, we intend to analyse Brazilian dictionaries regarding their macrostructure, in order to bring forward current Lexicography purpose in Brazil. Since lexical dynamism is in a continuously progress and it is expected to be considered in dictionary making and updating, we aim to discuss how a single lexical unit, that is “femicide”, is absent from analyzed vocabulary repertoires, although it has been broadly used for several years now in our country and increasingly frequent in the present socio-cultural reality. Lexicography has as its obligation to attend reality, mainly that concerned to technology. Consequently, it should make available to the target audience dictionaries that meet what is actually consonant with everyday life, with lexical units that are really in use, and that may translate the reality that surrounds and attains speakers with the same promptness as some circumstances create new words.
