In this article, we identified the pattern of application of disciplinary sanctions listed in article 53 of the Brazilian Penitentiary Law (Law nº 7.210/1984) by the administration in male prisons located in the state of Rio de Janeiro. To achieve this, we will address the following questions with a documentary analysis of 105 disciplinary proceedings: (i) which disciplinary sanctions are most frequently imposed, and (ii) which disciplinary infractions are most attributed to inmates by the prison administration? The article arguments that there exists a differential management of illegalities in the realm of attributing infractions and disciplinary sanctions, highlighting the administrative pursuit of certain behaviors over others.
