Open-access Celso Furtado em seu centenário de nascimento: pensamento e ação

abstract

The aim of this article is to analyze Furtado’s thinking through six of his works published between 1959 and 1974. This selected bibliography has a persistent trait: the endeavor to understand Brazilian underdevelopment. This pursuit can be found in the analysis of the genesis of our economic structure in Economic formation of Brazil; in the denunciation of the perverse effects required by the continuity of the process of economic growth in Analysis of the Brazilian model and in The myth of economic development; and finally, in the proposal of alternative objectives to the dynamics of this process and its deleterious consequences in A project for Brazil. Furthermore, in Theory and Policy of Economic Development and in Development and Underdevelopment, Furtado exposes some of the more general characteristics of underdeveloped economies, in addition to specifically Brazilian ones.
