ABSTRACT
This article discuss some aspects related to students performances in the municipal schools, in the city of São Paulo. The students in the basic education are evaluated by a national examination in the 5th and 9th degree, and in the end of secondary school. The indicators used in this discussion are the Standardized Average Grade (Saeb) and the (Development Indicator of Basic Education (Ideb). Some results show problems in the students level of learning proficiency. Due to the occurrence of this problems educational policy issues are addressed.
