Soluções baseadas na Natureza em projetos de revitalização de brownfields urbanos: novos paradigmas para problemas urbanos

ABSTRACT

Nature-Based Solutions (NbS) represent systemic approaches also facing urban problems and promoting sustainability in cities. At the same time, NbS have contributed to mitigating the effects of climate change, floods, heat islands and have accounted for positive effects in improving health and quality of life. Brownfields are underutilized and degraded urban areas whose revitalization allows adding benefits to the population. Thus, this paper presents an unprecedented approach in the Brazilian context exploring the integration of NbS in a brownfield revitalization project. As a methodological approach, the monetary valuation of five ecosystem services - climate regulation, runoff reduction, air filtration and ventilation, carbon sequestration, and recreation - offered by the integration of three different NbS (infiltration surfaces, water bodies, and vegetation). The use of NbS can result in benefits to society that are priced at around R$ 22 million per year. These results reveal new paradigms to be considered degraded areas revitalization projects in urban environments and represent great potential for application in urban public policies.
