Sandwich doctoral program in nursing: an experience report

Experience report about a sandwich doctoral training program carried out with the support of the Improvement Coordination of Superior Level staff, between October 2005 and January 2006, at the School of Nursing D. Ana Guedes in Porto, Portugal, an institution already visited during the undergraduate training. I had the opportunity to replicate the methodology applied in part of my thesis among Portuguese children. This allowed a comparative study between two cultures that have affinities, but also distinct characteristics. Besides, I gave classes, took part in courses and seminars and obtained more in-depth knowledge about the Theory of Cultural Care Diversity and Universality. I consider this experience a stimulus to guarantee the nurse's autonomy in nursing care, as a researcher and faculty, expanding knowledge and inserting it in the care process. Furthermore, it exerts a positive influence of the student's psychological, cultural and social maturing process.
