The infant mortality rate has been considered a summary of life’s quality and the level of population development and the birth weight is considered the risk factor that more influences the infant survival. Objective: to analyze the infant mortality in planning areas of Rio de Janeiro according to the weight in 2002. Methods: the source of dates was from the System of information about Mortality (SIM) according to birth weight in the Municipal district of Rio de Janeiro in 2002. In the west area we found concentrations of high infant deaths rates, in all of the weight grades analyzed. The results showed that efforts have been made to assure the access to pregnant and newborn in the health services to secure the appropriate obstetrics and neonatal care in the Rio de Janeiro, providing conditions for a pregnancy and safe birth.
