Sociological value in the integral care of the patient in contrast with functional care

The text entitled "Sociological Value in the Integral Care of the Patient in Contrast with Functional Care," written by Maria Cecilia Nurse Sanioto, was published in the journal Anais de Enfermagem (Annals of Nursing), Volume II, Number 3, on July of 1949 and was first presented at the II National Congress of Nursing, held in 1948 in Rio de Janeiro and organized by the Brazilian Association of Nursing, at the time called the Brazilian Association of Graduate Nurses.
The author begins her article by stating that human nature is expressed through the different ways of living characteristic of the different human groups, and based on this understanding she proposes to examine briefly "the meaning that these different ways of living take according to different views of social welfare."
The author discusses the meaning of the hospitalization experience, emphasizing that the patient's behavior is determined by her/his beliefs in relation with her/his need for hospital treatment, as well as by the restrictions imposed by the patient's illness and hospitalization. She also emphasizes the importance of considering the universality of human nature in order to promote a nursing care that considers cultural differences.
The author defines "functional care" as the working method in which "each nurse is responsible for parts of the planned treatment for the patient." She stresses that functional care does not take into consideration the patient as a whole, and that for the nurse or nursing student, functional care does not permit the integration of different aspects of the patient's treatment, thus leading to the loss of the dynamic relationship of the different aspects involved in care.
The author concludes the text by pointing out the advantages of integral care of the patient, noting that the nurse, when promoting integral care, will have a greater opportunity to develop professionally and will not just train in a particular professional technique.
