It was made an explorative research of field with the purpose to analyze the actions of health developed by the nurse along with the alcohol users and other drugs, evidencing the limits and possibilities of this acting in the extra-hospital services attention. The data obtained through interview with 30 nurses pointed gaps in this type of attention and the need of adhesion by the nurses to the National Politics of Attention to the User of Alcohol and other Drugs. It was verified that besides the program was not implanted in the studied cities, that the nurses, even without the capability to deal with this specific population, they admit by their own risk the care of this clientele, confirming the historical leadership in educational practices in health promotion.
