Scientometric study of scholarly activity on the themes of digital humanities and big data at São Paulo state universities

ABSTRACT

Objective:

To map the scholarly activity on Big Data and Digital Humanities research topics at the University of São Paulo (USP); São Paulo State University “Júlio de Mesquita Filho” (UNESP) and State University of Campinas (UNICAMP).

Methods:

analytical approach, being applied through a scientometric study. As for the objectives, it is an exploratory research, and as for the procedures, bibliographic and documentary. The core of the research is recovered from the scientific activities on Data and Humanities constituting São Paulo: in the Big Web of Science (publications); in the FAPESP and DGP/CNPq Virtual Library (research grants), and; in the Lattes Curriculum of the researchers identified in the FAPESP and CNPq databases (scientific activities).

Results:

They point out that the themes materialize in publications on the Web of Science from 2013 onwards, with a total of 281 publications, 92.9% of which are Big Data. A USP is present in 64.1%, a UNICAMP in 25.6% and a UNESP in 10.03%. As main areas of knowledge related to thematic areas such as Computer Science, Medicine and Information Science.

Conclusion:

it made it possible to understand that the choice of a research methodology that includes, both as carried out (publications) and other scientific activities such as research grants (projects (potential research) and grants), can offer a comprehensive look. establishing and materializing on universities in state universities. Revealing, therefore, that a study limits the representation of the Web of Science mainly as a theme in the areas of Exact and EarthSciences. The wider range of sources adopted (visualized in the FAPESP and CNPq research grants) allowed us to observe the role that the Humanities and Applied Social Sciences have been playing, and more importantly, the insertion of Information Science.
