Knowledge Organization Systems in Intellectual Property: analysis of the thesaurus proposed for the Postgraduate Program in Intellectual Property and Innovation (PPGPI) and the glossary of the National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI)

ABSTRACT

Objective:

From the perspective of Knowledge Organization Systems (KOS) related to intellectual property (IP), this study seeks to understand the use of two Brazilian KOS tools in IP. To achieve this goal, it analyzes the thesaurus proposed to the Graduate Program in Intellectual Property and Innovation (PPGPI) and the Glossary of the National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI).

Methods:

To carry out this assessment, a descriptive and qualitative methodology was structured along with a theoretical review of the fields related to the research theme.

Results:

The findings reveal that both KOS were very well developed.

Conclusions:

It is concluded, therefore, that the thesaurus removes the ambiguities of the terms used in the INPI Academy and makes appropriate terminological standardization. The Glossary in IP has the potential to contribute to this area of knowledge, being able to reach a broad audience, such as researchers and citizens interested in better understanding the concepts in IP, as they improve communication among researchers, facilitate access to information for inventors and companies, and support teaching and learning in IP.
