Approach to scientific data management in a graduate study plan: results of a didactic experience

ABSTRACT

Objective:

This article aims to present a design project and a proposal for the implementation of a scientific data management strategy suitable for a research unit, highlighting how this theme can be included in an undergraduate curriculum in Information Science, through project-based learning. Evidencing what is scientific data management and what are the components of a scientific data management strategy, frame this general objective.

Methods:

A literature review and a documental search on scientific data management was carried out, complemented by a survey on free software for scientific data management, for framing and development of the project's theme. To implement the project-based learning methodology, a blog was created to improve the interaction between the students and the teacher, as well as to spread out the project's outputs.

Results:

A survey of the main aspects to be considered in a scientific data management policy is presented. From this survey, a document guiding a scientific data management policy suitable to a research unit was created. Based on this document, materials were developed for dissemination and promotion of scientific data management. Once the software for scientific data management was identified, the CKAN software was selected, and a video explaining the functionalities that this tool offers was produced. Promotional materials for a scientific data strategy were also created, including a graphic flyer and a video tutorial.

Conclusions:

This paper shows that the creation of a scientific data management strategy for a research unit involves a complex process that calls for a wide range of skills of the information professional, which can be profitably developed through project-based learning. On the other hand, the advantages inherent in the implementation of a scientific data management strategy for research units are highlighted, as it minimizes the probability of unexpected damages and maximizes the investment in research.
