Education in prisons as public policy: between challenges and tasks

This article tries to bring ideas that can represent alternatives to the debate on education for youngs and adults the provision of education in detention facilities, emphasizing the need to implement public policies that conceive education as a human right, investing in its school and non-school dimensions, in its infrastructure, and in didactic-pedagogical and human resources. Conceiving education means rethinking prison institution as a learning community, which involves all the people who participate in it, endowing those imprisoned with knowledge, values and skills that will in turn enable them to acknowledge themselves as subjects that lead their own lives and rethink their past toward a future life plan.
