RACE RELATIONS, ACADEMIC CULTURE AND THE TENSIONS AFTER AFFIRMATIVE ACTION

Affirmative action in higher education put on the agenda a number of issues about the public university and about race relations on Brazilian society. It brings to the scene a discussion that can not be postponed: the role of the university facing the contemporary challenges and its effective democratization. This study aims to analyze the academic and curricular culture and their derived configurations of the presence of quota black students in the routine of Federal University of Santa Catarina. For this we use as methodological procedures: the analysis of the normative documents and pedagogical projects of nine undergraduate courses; questionnaires applied to teachers and course coordinators and the testimonials of black female students. The research allowed to identify the challenges and tensions that the implementation of affirmative action brings to everyday life of the university to ensure access and permanence (material and symbolic) with social quality for black quota students.

Affirmative action; Academic culture; Racial inequalities.
