Abstract
This essay investigates the history of the Clube de Economistas (Economists’ Club) and its journal Econômica Brasileira. The club was created in 1955 in Rio de Janeiro, bringing together nationalist-developmentalist economists. Celso Furtado conceived and led both the club and the journal. The club came to an end in 1964, with the military coup. We tell the story about the origins of the club. Created amidst the 1954 political crisis, the club emerged from deteriorating relations and increased tensions between nationalist economists and the FGV-RJ liberal economists and their journal Revista Brasileira de Economia. The leader of this last group was Eugênio Gudin. An even more ambitious goal of the club was to establish an original school of thought in the country. Finally, we survey the literature published in the journal Econômica Brasileira.
