Roger Bastide, Antonio Candido and the interrupted thesis on the cururu

Abstract

In this text, we will discuss the relations between the research program in sociology of art led by Roger Bastide in the Faculty of Philosophy, Letters and Human Sciences of the University of São Paulo (FFCL-USP) in the 1940s and 1950s, and the incomplete thesis Antonio Candido on the cururu. The analysis of this material and its context allows us to evaluate theoretical and methodological connections between the authors and to pinpoint the possible disputes in play at that moment around the succession of the French sociologist at USP by his disciples from São Paulo.
