Abstract
The article deals with the actions of international agencies in development projects in the Amazon region in the 1950s and 1960s. FAO and UNICEF worked with the purpose of developing a forestry economy and reducing hunger in the Amazon, respectively. The article shows that these agencies had to adapt to local conditions, that they have at times argued with Brazilian authorities and have presented peculiar views on the Amazon and its inhabitants.
