Abstract
The article considers the formation of the Union of Workers from Favelas (União dos Trabalhadores Favelados - UTF) in Rio de Janeiro and the Federation of Workers from Favelas of Belo Horizonte (Federação dos Trabalhadores Favelados de Belo Horizonte -FTFBH) in the context of the democratic experience (1945-1964). Furthermore, it analyzes the formation of supra-local resident associations and how the culture and political identity of favela workers has been constituted in Brazilian’s process of urbanization. Grounded in historical research on favelas, the study’s analysis makes comparisons between the associations in Rio de Janeiro and Belo Horizonte.
