Comblin: Historiography, oral history, and memory

ABSTRACT

This article is based on a text published by the press, with wide repercussions in the public sphere, as well as two oral history interviews, which refer to the crisis between the Catholic Church and the civil-military regime. Written by Father José Comblin to assist Dom Helder Camara at the Episcopal Conference in Medellín, 1968, the text has been released by an anti-communist council member. The expulsion of Comblin from Brazil, in 1972, is analyzed according to his oral testimony. Records and documentary traces are studied in multiple temporalities. Along this path, the current article presents reflections that confront reports of oral history, historiography, and memory.
