The information behavior of women victims of domestic violence: analysis of social barriers to access to information from Chatman's perspective

Abstract:

It examines the characteristics of information behavior of women victims of domestic violence in relation to social barriers to accessing information. Specifically, it describes the circumstances that encouraged women victims of domestic violence to seek information. The reflections of this research mention the works developed in the area of Information Science by Chatman. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with two professionals from the Centro das Mulheres do Cabo and with four women victims of domestic violence who sought care there. The data obtained were examined in the light of content analysis. The study highlighted the social issues that cross information flows, in addition to the social norms that shape the information behavior of women victims of domestic violence, explained in the naturalization of this cruelty, in the maintenance of secrecy about their information needs and self-protection resources. adopted. Therefore, it can be assumed that these women experience a reality of poverty in information.
