The digital collection of rare works of the Benedito Leite public library: contributions of open access to the achievement of the sustainable development goals

Abstract:

A study aiming to analyze the digital library of rare works at the Benedito Leite Public Library, its resources, and contributions to the dissemination of special collections and the fulfillment of sustainable development goals in São Luís - Maranhão, from the perspective of Open access. Regarding the methodology, it is a basic nature study, descriptive in character with a qualitative approach, seeking to characterize the Collection of digital rare works and discuss its contributions to achieving the goals of the 2030 Agenda and Sustainable Development Objectives in the local and state context. To do so, bibliographic research, documentary research, field research, and systematic analysis of Digital rare works portal are adopted as technical procedures. Based on the results, it is noted that, given the role of the Benedito Leite Public Library and its initiative to make its digital collection of special materials openly accessible, the institution's commitment is reinforced, both to the missions advocated by the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions and to the Open access movement, and above all, to the goals of the 2030 Agenda, as it favors universal access to information and thus contributes equitably to social transformation in different dimensions of society. This is crucial for public libraries to embrace the 2030 Agenda so that their contributions are effective for the diverse communities served by these mediation devices.
