Open-access Academic choices and vocational interest in students with high mathematical ability

Abstract

The academic and vocational orientation favors the choices of the students, taking relevance in Secondary Education. This article presents the academic choices and vocational interest of a group of twenty-two schoolchildren who in the 2011/2012 academic year were diagnosed with high mathematical ability. In the 2017/2018 academic year, a follow-up was made in order to analyze its academic trajectory and vocational preference. Statistical significance appears in fields of clear masculine tradition. These results are part of the widely observed trend that gender inequalities persist in society and in Education and that in recent decades have a clear reflection in the low choice of female students in the STEM disciplines, although they are very capable.
