The defense of agricultural education by Dario Vellozo in the journal A Escola

Abstract

This paper presents the debate related to Agricultural Education published in the journal A Escola, focusing on the texts produced by Dario Vellozo, in which the intellectual presents his concepts of the Modern School (Escola Moderna). The problem is characterized by seeking to understand the reasons that led him to incorporate and defend agricultural education as the core of his proposal of school. Therefore, the research aims to analyze the texts published by Dario Vellozo in the journal, based on the historical method of analysis. We understand that sources are not neutral and must be contextualized based on the historical interpretation of the period. As a result, based on the analysis of the sources we found that both the publications in A Escola and Dario Vellozo’s work were aimed at promoting the discussion of agricultural education in the state of Paraná, aligned with the interests of the Paraná State Agricultural Society (SEAP), which had a direct interest in the modernization of the Brazilian countryside and the diversification of agricultural production. We grounded our analysis on Antonio Gramsci’s conceptions of intellectuals and, based on this, we understand that Dario Vellozo acted to organize consensus around a specific class project, defended by the SEAP. A Escola journal is the source of this study and it is available on Hemeroteca Digital Brasileira’s website.
