Bean bag’ type games in evolution classes

Abstract:

The paper describes the use of didactic games based on “Bean Bag Genetics” for the teaching of the evolutionary theory in undergraduate classes from a Brazilian state university. These games are in line with teaching proposals based on active methodologies, in which the students make questions and test predictions through data generation and its findings. Results have shown good receptivity of the students to the games. Regarding the learning process, the “Bean Bag” games seem to have contributed to overcome problems related to mathematical aspects of population genetics, reformulation of preconceptions, and to put the abstract aspects of the evolutionary theory in a more concrete form. Thus, it was possible to conclude that these games can become an additional tool to the teaching of the evolutionary theory.
