The development of child's ability to tell personal experiences: a literature review

Parents' participation in the development of their children cognitive and communicative abilities has been analyzed in the last fifteen years especially from a social interactionist perspective. Recent studies indicate that children learn to narrate about their memories of past events in an organized manner, in collaboration with their parents. A number of authors suggest that the development of narrative forms allow the child to create meaning for their living experiences. The aim of this article is to revise the literature on the development of children's ability to narrate their personal experiences as well as on the role of the verbal support offered by the mother in the course of this development.
