Culture, school supplies and teacher training: how to discipline the body - images and texts

Material culture encloses educational concepts through school requirements that indicate what and how to teach. In this perspective, we analyzed the journal Physical Education, organized by the Military Center of Physical Education of Rio de Janeiro, published monthly between the years 1932-1939. This magazine was used in the teacher training process in the Physical Education Normal Course. Their editions belong to the period in which the course was created in Curitiba, through the foundation of the School of Physical Education and Sports of Paraná. In particular, we addressed the normal course of physical education attended for two years in Normal Schools for the training of primary school teachers, where the teacher would obtain the degree of Bachelor in Education, specialized in physical education. The aim of this paper is to analyze the content of these magazines to capture the concept of physical education contained therein in accordance to the ideals of the period in which they are produced and put into circulation. For that we undertake an interpretive assessment that points to a disciplinary understanding of moral training that should be disseminated by teachers in primary schools.
