ABSTRACT
To António Nóvoa, there are many ways to be a teacher: diverse options and pathways. However, in all of them, he defends the importance of understanding the complexity of the profession in all its dimensions: theoretical, experiential, cultural, political, ideological, and symbolic. Professional teaching knowledge is contingent, collective, and public. Based on this knowledge, he states that new models of teacher education should be organized in a preparation that guarantees teachers’ spaces and times to develop self-knowledge and self-reflection on the personal, professional, and collective dimensions of teaching.
