The offer of teacher education programs in the state of São Paulo after the expansion of the federal institute

ABSTRACT

This paper analyzes the offer of teacher education programs in the state of São Paulo after the expansion of campuses at the the Federal Institute of São Paulo (IFSP). The objective was to examine the growth of teacher education programs in the IF model and its reach in this state in comparison to other higher education institutions. The paper is a result of a research in which data and official documents were analized and also inteviews were conducted with government managers, about the Federal Institutes (IFs) project. It is observed that there was a concentration of teacher education programs in metropolitan regions, mainly via private HEIs, and a notable presence of public institutions in inland regions. Also, data about evaluation of undergraduate courses taught in São Paulo, are included by means of the Preliminary Course Concept (CPC), an indicator of the National Higher Education Assessment System (Sinaes). It is concluded that the opening of new IFSP degrees took place mainly in the interior of São Paulo allowing the expansion of teacher education with quality standards in some regions that previously lacked public institutions. Finally, the institution was highlighted in the offer, mainly, of degrees in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.
