ULTRACONSERVATISM AND EDUCATION: REFLECTIONS FROM AN EMPIRICAL STUDY

ABSTRACT

This article aimed to analyze how right-wing extremist discourses on education are understood by conservative voters. Through mini-focus groups with teachers, mothers, and fathers of students from the public school system classified as moderate conservatives, the objective was to understand: to what extent these discourses are known, and the degree of adherence to these topics among the average voter. The topics addressed included homeschooling, school militarization, among others. It is concluded that there are little familiarity and low knowledge about the discussed topics, with some exceptions. Despite the language and conservative thinking permeating the discourses overall, it is possible to identify nuances and contradictions in the beliefs and opinions of this audience.
