Alternative education strategies in the struggles of indigenous peoples in Mexico

ABSTRACT:

The processes of autonomy construction in rural and indigenous territories pave a new way for learning practices based on rural, cultural, environmental struggles. Inside and outside schools, the purpose is to recognize different values and both local and scientific knowledge related to struggles that end up generating education strategies aimed for indigenous autonomy and sustainability in agriculture in Mexico. This socio-anthropological analysis puts the spotlight on educational experiences of the Mayan Zapatists in southeast Mexico, of the indigenous population in southern Oaxaca State, and the community of Cherán, in Michoacán, as result of alternative strategies against the State and territorial threats.
