GENDER-RESTRICTIVE GROUPS, MORAL PANIC AND COMPREHENSIVE SEXUAL EDUCATION

ABSTRACT

This article is based on the findings of previous research that demonstrates how faith-based gender-restrictive groups, operating across various religious denominations and often transnationally, are using childhood and the rhetoric of child protection to fabricate moral panic and mobilize it against human rights, particularly those related to gender justice. In particular, the article will highlight the importance of education as the main sector for neoconservative activation and mobilization (and the growing sectors of trans-exclusive feminism) through accusations of imposing “gender ideology”; and it will emphasize the importance of creating multisectoral strategies to address this phenomenon.
