PROFESSIONAL AND TECHNOLOGICAL EDUCATION: SPACE-TIME OF HUMAN FURTHERANCE?

ABSTRACT

This philosophy of education article discusses professional and technological education as a space-time in human furtherance. The argument is structured in three parts: first, it revisits the ancient Greeks, founders of the educational idea of the dualism between professional education and general education. Second, it analyzes Marx’s conception of omnilateral education, which criticizes the legacy of classical education and proposes overcoming such dualism by uniting teaching and work. Third, based on the Greek strength-idea of skholé, revisited by Rancière and Masschelein, it presents professional and technological education as a space-time of human furtherance, while enabling free time that suspends the unequal logic of the world of work.
