Academic rankings and world class universities: relations, consequences and trends

ABSTRACT:

This article analyzed the relations between academic rankings and the World Class University model, as well as the capacity of these instruments to induce policies, planning and management. The methodology is based on bibliographic survey, document analysis, indicators and metrics of the rankings Academic Ranking of World Universities and Times Higher Education. It considers the rankings are technologies that operate via governance based on benchmarking, creating a space of international visibilityin which competitiveness is intensified, corroborating with the diffusion of the World Class University model. This process tendentially points to the deepening of institutional differentiation and the strengthening of increasingly pragmatic concepts of university and science.
