REQUESTS, SCOPES, AND BORDERS IN STUDENT PARTICIPATION IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN BUENOS AIRES CITY

ABSTRACT

The paper analyzes the student experiences of political participation in four secondary schools in Buenos Aires City (Argentina) that which have different socioeconomic and institutional profiles. From a qualitative work that involved conducting focus groups, the paper explores the actions stimulated by the students and their agendas and requests, linked to both educational institutions, and public spheres. Regarding the actions, we identified the persistence of traditional protest formats along with the emergence of performance-type actions. In relation to the agendas and requests, we highlight the centrality of the opposition to educational policies implemented by the local government, the petitions of improvements in school infrastructure, and, as the main finding, the cross-politicization of dimensions such as gender, sexuality, diversity, and dissent in pursuit of recognition policies.
