Gender, sexuality and formal education in Brazil: a preliminary analysis of the academic production between 1990 and 2006

This paper refers to the results of a research called Democratizing knowledge: the state-of-the-art about gender and formal education as a resource to formulate governmental and nongovernmental agendas and political actions. Conducted through 2006-2007, it was meant to analyze, systematize and divulge the knowledge accumulated by the Brazilian academic production on the relationship between formal education and the themes of gender, women, and/or sexuality. It organized a database with the titles and abstracts of 1.213 dissertations, thesis, or papers. The present text highlights both the theoretical challenges, related to understanding the concepts pursued by the survey, and the methodological ones, such as descriptor definition and the sources to be investigated. It finally presents tables and graphics that draws an initial picture of the material available on the database and indicates the growing interest for these themes within the period studied.
