THE NEW RIGHT AND THE ATTACKS TO THE AUTONOMY OF UNIVERSITIES IN BRAZIL

ABSTRACT

University autonomy has been heavily attacked in recent years. This article anlyzes a specific period in the recent history of the country with the purpose of understanding the treatment that the Bolsonaro government conferred on federal public universities. The study showed, among other aspects, that the new Brazilian right acted to erode the image of universities; destroy the institutional conditions for the professional practice of professors, technical-administrative servants and students, change the regulatory frameworks referring to the choice and appointment of directors, and empty the financial and patrimonial autonomy of universities.
