ABSTRACT:
This article discusses the 40-year history of the Education & Society Journal, situating the political context of its emergence corresponding to the 1970s, characterized by the rise and decline of the military dictatorship in Brazil. The article then situates the mobilization of the educational field in the process of democratic openness and describes, in a third moment, the institutional framework in which occurred the foundation of the journal, presenting a possible explanation for the choice of its name. Finally, this work briefly recapits the eleven numbers with which the author contributed directly.
