To explore how the Brazilian school system has appropriated the written press, this paper recurs to the characteristics of three complementary disciplines: the political and theoretical trends in teacher training; the didactic books for Portuguese classes; and classroom experience. It highlights the challenges and newness of this task, and the need for an articulated political action to deal with the press and media at school.
