This paper analyzes the current governmental policies in Brazilian education and their effects on the pedagogical field of teacher education. It presents some general statistical data about Brazilian Higher Education and connects them to the governmental aims and to the orientations of such international funding institutions as the World Bank. Finally, the Teacher Education Forums in Brazilian Universities are presented as a strategy to construct alternatives for preservice teacher education.
