SCHOOL REPUTATION: ANALYSIS OF TWO SCHOOLS IN A LOCAL SCHOOL MARKET

ABSTRACT

This article analyzes the reputation of two public schools in a local school market. The school’s reputations are related to the actions of families, education professionals, and school organizations, impacting the production of school segregation and educational inequality in education systems. The research included field observation, focus groups with teachers and interviews with education professionals and students’ guardians. The factors associated with school’s reputations were related to the characteristics of organizational identity, educational provision, school and disciplinary climate. In the two cases studied, the geographic position and social composition of the students had a strong conditioning effect on the possibilities of insertion of schools in the education market.
