Reservoir operation based on the average phosphorus contribution - Part II

ABSTRACT

This paper describes the steps taken and the results of a research that aimed to develop strategies for reservoir operation, but specifically the volumes released by bottom discharge in an attempt to reduce phosphorus concentrations and hence the tendency to eutrophication of the Jucazinho water reservoir , located in the Agreste Region of Pernambuco State, Brazil. A mass balance approach was adopted to simulate the total phosphorus, depending on scenarios of nutrient reductions through the implementation of treatment plants of domestic and industrial effluents and the average water withdrawn from the reservoir. The simulated scenarios indicated that the appropriate operation for the renewal of water along with the implementation of high standards of sewage treatment can lead to the recovery of water quality in the medium term.
